Mount Kilimanjaro stands in northeastern Tanzania, 330km south of the equator and 30km from Moshi. Here is everything about getting there โ flights, airports, transfers, and which gate your route starts from.
It is one of the most searched questions about Africa's highest mountain, and the answer surprises many people: Mount Kilimanjaro is in Tanzania, East Africa — not Kenya, despite what countless souvenir postcards and misattributed photographs suggest. The mountain rises from the plains of northeastern Tanzania in the Kilimanjaro Region, just 330 kilometres south of the equator and roughly 30 kilometres from the town of Moshi.
As guides who have led 500+ expeditions on these slopes, we have welcomed climbers from over 60 countries — and a good number arrive with only a vague sense of where they are going. This guide gives you the full geographic picture.
Exact Location and Coordinates
Kilimanjaro's summit — Uhuru Peak — sits at 3°4'33"S, 37°21'12"E, placing it in the Southern Hemisphere just below the equator. The mountain is part of the Eastern Rift mountains and rises as a freestanding volcanic massif from the surrounding plains at approximately 900 metres elevation. At 5,895 metres, it is the highest point on the African continent and the tallest freestanding mountain in the world.
The mountain straddles the border area between Tanzania and Kenya, but the entire summit and all climbing routes are within Tanzanian territory. The Kenya-Tanzania border runs along the mountain's northern base. From certain vantage points in Kenya's Amboseli National Park, you can see Kilimanjaro's snow-capped dome — but every step of the climb is in Tanzania.
Nearest Cities and Towns
Moshi (30 km from the mountain)
Moshi is the closest major town to Kilimanjaro and the traditional base for climbing expeditions. With a population of around 200,000, it sits at approximately 890 metres on the mountain's southern slopes. Most climbing operators — including Snow Africa Adventure — are based in Moshi, and the town has well-developed tourism infrastructure.
From Moshi, the drive to various entry gates takes between 45 minutes and 2.5 hours depending on your route.
Arusha (80 km from the mountain)
Arusha is the larger regional city and a major hub for both Kilimanjaro climbs and northern Tanzania safari circuits. With a population exceeding 400,000, Arusha offers more accommodation and is ideal for climbers combining Kilimanjaro with a safari to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, or Tarangire.
How to Get to Kilimanjaro
By Air: Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)
Kilimanjaro International Airport (IATA: JRO) is the primary gateway. Located between Moshi and Arusha, JRO receives direct flights from Amsterdam (KLM), Istanbul (Turkish Airlines), Doha (Qatar Airways), and Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines), plus regional connections from Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, and Zanzibar.

Some climbers fly into Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) and travel overland — approximately 4–5 hours via the Namanga border crossing. This adds a full travel day and border crossing. For visa requirements, see our Tanzania visa guide.

Kilimanjaro National Park
The mountain and its surrounding forest belt are protected within Kilimanjaro National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site established in 1973. The park covers 1,688 square kilometres. All climbers must register at a park gate, pay park fees, and be accompanied by a licensed guide — independent climbing is not permitted.

Tanzania: The Broader Context
Tanzania is an East African country bordering Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, the DRC, Mozambique, Malawi, and Zambia, with the Indian Ocean to the east. For most Kilimanjaro climbers, Tanzania means three things: the mountain, the safari parks, and Zanzibar.
The northern safari circuit — Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, Lake Manyara — is world-class and easily combined with a Kilimanjaro climb. Zanzibar offers post-climb beach relaxation. Check our complete climbing guide for how to build the perfect Tanzania itinerary.
Climate at Kilimanjaro's Location
Kilimanjaro's near-equatorial location means approximately 12 hours of daylight year-round. At the base in Moshi, temperatures hover around 25–30°C. At the summit, temperatures can plunge to -20°C or lower with wind chill. For month-by-month weather data, see our Kilimanjaro weather guide.
