Everything you need to know about the Ngorongoro Crater โ wildlife, fees, best time to visit, crater rim lodges, photography tips, and how to combine with the Serengeti.
The Ngorongoro Crater is the single most concentrated wildlife viewing destination on Earth. I have guided hundreds of game drives on the crater floor, and it still takes my breath away every time we descend those 600 meters into what is essentially a natural amphitheater teeming with life. This guide covers everything you need to know โ from the crater's volcanic origins to practical details about fees, timing, and what you will actually see down there.
What Is the Ngorongoro Crater?
The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest inactive, intact, and unflooded volcanic caldera. It formed 2-3 million years ago when a massive volcano โ estimated to have been as tall as Kilimanjaro โ collapsed inward after a colossal eruption emptied its magma chamber. What remains is a nearly perfect amphitheater: 19 kilometers across, 600 meters deep, and covering 264 square kilometers of crater floor.
To put that in perspective: the crater floor is roughly the size of Manhattan. And unlike a national park where animals roam across vast landscapes, the steep walls of the crater act as a natural enclosure. Most of the 25,000+ large animals that live on the crater floor stay there permanently โ they have everything they need: grasslands, forest, freshwater lakes, and a permanent water source from the Munge River.
The crater sits within the larger Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA), a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering 8,292 square kilometers. The NCA is unique in Africa because it is a multiple-use area โ both wildlife and the Maasai people coexist here, with the Maasai permitted to graze cattle but not to cultivate crops.
Wildlife: The Densest Concentration in Africa
The Ngorongoro Crater has the highest density of large predators anywhere in Africa. On a typical 6-hour game drive, you can reasonably expect to see:
The Big Five
All five โ lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino โ live in the crater, making it one of the few places in Tanzania where you can see all Big Five in a single day. Here is the reality for each:
- LionThe crater supports approximately 60-80 lions in several prides. They are highly visible because the open grassland offers nowhere to hide. Lion sightings are almost guaranteed โ I would say 95% of our crater game drives spot at least one pride.
- ElephantAround 60-70 bull elephants live on the crater floor. You will notice they are almost all males โ the steep crater walls are difficult for mothers with calves to navigate, so breeding herds stay on the rim and surrounding highlands. The bulls you see are impressive old tuskers.
- BuffaloLarge herds of Cape buffalo graze the crater grasslands. Hundreds are visible on most drives, often in dense groups near the Mandusi swamp and Gorigor swamp areas.
- RhinocerosThis is the real prize. The crater is home to a small but critical population of endangered Eastern black rhinoceros โ roughly 26-30 individuals as of recent surveys. The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most reliable places in all of East Africa to see black rhino in the wild. They are usually distant (rhinos are wary), so bring a telephoto lens or good binoculars.
- LeopardPresent but elusive. Leopards prefer the Lerai Forest on the crater floor and the densely vegetated rim areas. Sightings happen but are not guaranteed โ maybe 15-20% of game drives. Consider them a bonus if you spot one.
Other Notable Species
- Spotted hyenaThe crater has one of the densest hyena populations anywhere. Clans of 30-40 individuals are common, and you will often see them on kills or lounging near their dens.
- WildebeestApproximately 7,000-10,000 wildebeest live permanently in the crater (separate from the migrating population in the Serengeti). They form the bulk of prey for the lions and hyenas.
- ZebraSeveral thousand plains zebras graze alongside the wildebeest herds.
- FlamingoLake Magadi, the alkaline soda lake on the crater floor, attracts thousands of lesser flamingos when conditions are right. The pink-lined shore against the green crater walls is one of the most photographed scenes in Tanzania.
- HippoThe Mandusi and Gorigor swamps support resident hippo pods. You will see them submerged with just ears and eyes above water.
- Serval and golden jackalBoth are present and occasionally spotted in the crater grasslands.
What You Will NOT See
Notably absent from the crater: giraffe (the crater walls are too steep for them to descend), impala, and topi. Crocodiles are also absent โ the crater floor lacks suitable rivers. If you want giraffe and impala, you will see them in abundance at Tarangire and Serengeti.
The Maasai of Ngorongoro
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is the only protected area in Tanzania where indigenous people live alongside wildlife. Over 90,000 Maasai live within the NCA boundaries, continuing their semi-nomadic pastoralist lifestyle. Their cattle graze on the rim and surrounding highlands, though they no longer live on the crater floor itself (they were relocated in 1974).
You will see Maasai bomas (homesteads) along the roads as you approach the crater, and Maasai warriors in traditional red shukas walking with their cattle herds. Many organized tours include optional visits to Maasai villages ($20-$30 per person), where you can learn about their culture, housing, and way of life. These visits are somewhat staged for tourism, but they provide income directly to the community.
The coexistence of Maasai and wildlife is one of the things that makes Ngorongoro unique. The Maasai have lived alongside these animals for centuries, and their presence is part of the landscape's character and UNESCO World Heritage designation.
Best Time to Visit Ngorongoro Crater
The crater is genuinely excellent year-round โ one of few safari destinations where I would say that honestly. The permanent water sources mean wildlife does not migrate out seasonally. That said, some months are better than others:
Peak Season: June-October
Dry season. Clear skies, minimal rain, and the grass is shorter โ making wildlife easier to spot. Morning temperatures on the rim (2,200m elevation) drop to 5-10ยฐC, so bring warm layers. This is also the busiest period, with vehicle congestion on the crater floor peaking in July-August. If crowds bother you, early June and October are better bets.
Calving Season: January-February
Spectacular and underrated. The short dry season coincides with calving on the Serengeti plains just east of Ngorongoro. The crater itself is lush and green, the flamingos are often at peak numbers on Lake Magadi, and predator-prey interactions intensify with young calves attracting lions and hyenas. This is my personal favorite time in the crater.
Green Season: March-May
The long rains bring afternoon showers but mornings are frequently clear. The crater is stunningly green with wildflowers, and lodge rates drop 30-40%. Fewer vehicles mean a more private experience. Roads can be muddy but are generally passable โ the crater floor roads are well-maintained.
November-December
Short rains โ lighter and less predictable than the long rains. Wildlife viewing remains good, prices are moderate, and crowds are manageable except during Christmas/New Year when bookings spike.
Crater Floor Game Drive: What to Expect
A crater game drive is unlike anything else on a Tanzania safari. Here is what the experience actually looks like:
Descent and Ascent
There are two designated descent roads and one ascent road on the crater walls โ all vehicles must use these specific routes. The descent takes 20-30 minutes and follows a steep, switchback dirt road that drops 600 meters. It is bumpy but not dangerous. Your driver has done this hundreds of times. The views as you descend are extraordinary โ the entire crater floor spreads out below you like a living diorama.
Duration
Most crater game drives last 5-6 hours. TANAPA regulates time on the crater floor, and vehicles are not permitted to stay overnight. The standard pattern is to descend at 7:00-7:30 AM, drive the floor until early afternoon, and ascend by 2:00-3:00 PM. We carry packed lunches eaten at designated picnic sites โ Ngoitokitok Springs is the most popular, with hippos in the pool beside you as you eat.
The Crater Floor
The floor is primarily open grassland with scattered acacia woodland and two freshwater swamps (Mandusi and Gorigor). Lake Magadi โ a shallow, alkaline soda lake โ dominates the western section. The Lerai Forest is a strip of yellow fever acacia trees that provides habitat for elephants, monkeys, and the occasional leopard. Driving distances between wildlife hotspots are short โ 5-15 minutes between areas โ so you spend more time watching animals and less time driving between them.
Vehicle Numbers
Be realistic about crowds. During peak season, 50-80 vehicles may be on the crater floor simultaneously. When a rhino or lion kill is spotted, vehicles cluster. Early morning descent gives you 1-2 hours of relatively uncrowded viewing before the bulk of vehicles arrive from rim lodges and day trips from Karatu. Off-peak months (March-May, November) may see only 15-30 vehicles โ a dramatically different experience.
Fees and Costs
Ngorongoro is the most expensive single day on any Tanzania safari. Here is the fee breakdown:
- NCA Entry Fee$82 per person per 24 hours
- Crater Service Fee$295 per vehicle per descent โ this is the big one
- Vehicle FeeAdditional fee based on vehicle registration (foreign-registered vehicles pay more)
- Concession FeeIf staying at a lodge or camp within the NCA, there is an additional nightly concession fee
For a family of four in a single vehicle, the crater descent alone costs $295 (vehicle) + $328 (4 x $82 entry) = $623 minimum. This is before accommodation, meals, guide, or transport. The fees are steep, but they fund conservation of this irreplaceable ecosystem and support the Maasai communities who share the land.
Accommodation: Where to Stay
Crater Rim Lodges
The rim lodges offer the most dramatic locations in Tanzania โ perched at 2,200m elevation with direct views down into the crater. The morning mist rising from the crater floor as you sip coffee on your balcony is one of the iconic African safari moments.
- Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge โ Built into the crater rim itself, with stone and timber architecture blending into the landscape. Mid-luxury, $300-$600/night.
- &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge โ The most opulent option. Stilted suites with chandeliers and butler service. Ultra-luxury, $1,500-$3,000/night.
- Lemala Ngorongoro Tented Camp โ Seasonal camp on the quieter eastern rim. Excellent for avoiding crowds. Luxury, $600-$1,000/night.
- Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge โ Government-run lodge with the widest panoramic crater view. Mid-range, $200-$400/night.
Karatu (Outside the NCA)
The town of Karatu, 20 minutes from the NCA gate, has the widest range of accommodation at lower prices. You sacrifice the crater rim location but save significantly:
- Budget$50-$100/night (Kudu Lodge, Bougainvillea Safari Lodge)
- Mid-range$150-$300/night (Ngorongoro Farm House, Plantation Lodge, Gibb's Farm)
- Luxury$400-$800/night (The Manor at Ngorongoro, Acacia Farm Lodge)
Staying in Karatu adds 30-45 minutes each way to your crater game drive, but at half the price of rim lodges, most mid-range safaris use Karatu accommodation. It is a practical choice that puts the savings toward an extra day elsewhere in your itinerary.
Photography Tips
- Lens choiceBring a 70-200mm or 100-400mm zoom. The open grassland means animals are often at medium range (30-100 meters). A 600mm is overkill for most crater sightings except rhinos (which tend to be distant).
- LightThe crater rim casts a shadow on the western floor in early morning and eastern floor in late afternoon. The best light for photography is 9:00-11:00 AM and 2:00-3:00 PM when the sun is high enough to illuminate the entire floor.
- DustThe crater floor is dusty in dry season. Keep lens caps on when not shooting and bring a lens cleaning kit. A UV filter on your expensive glass is cheap insurance.
- FlamingosLake Magadi is best photographed from the northwestern approach where the pink flamingo line stands against the green crater wall backdrop. Morning light is ideal.
- Elevation fogThe rim frequently has morning fog that burns off by 8:00-9:00 AM. Photos from the rim at dawn can be magical โ or white-out, depending on conditions.
Combining Ngorongoro with the Serengeti
Almost every northern circuit safari combines Ngorongoro with the Serengeti. The two parks are connected by road through the NCA โ the drive from Ngorongoro's rim to the Serengeti's Naabi Hill Gate takes 2-3 hours. Most itineraries structure the combination in one of two ways:
- Serengeti first, Ngorongoro lastThis is the most common sequence. You drive through the NCA on day 1 (sometimes with a crater descent en route), spend 2-3 days in the Serengeti, then descend into the crater on your final full safari day before driving to Arusha. This works well because the crater is closer to Arusha, reducing your final day's travel time.
- Ngorongoro first, Serengeti afterLess common but useful if you are flying out of Serengeti (internal flight to Arusha or Zanzibar). Descend into the crater on day 1, then continue to the Serengeti for the remainder of your safari.
A minimum of 5 days is needed to combine both properly โ 1 day Ngorongoro, 2-3 days Serengeti, plus travel days. Our most popular combination is the 5-day northern circuit including Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro.
Day Trip vs Overnight
Some operators offer Ngorongoro as a day trip from Arusha or Karatu. This is technically possible โ 3 hours drive each way plus 5-6 hours on the crater floor โ but it makes for a 14-hour day and you miss the rim experience entirely. We strongly recommend at least one overnight on the rim or in Karatu. The sunrise over the crater, the evening atmosphere on the rim, and starting the day without a 3-hour drive all justify the extra night.
Practical Tips
- Bring warm clothingThe rim sits at 2,200m and temperatures drop to 5-10ยฐC at night and early morning. A fleece and windbreaker are essential.
- Start earlyDescend at first opportunity (around 7:00 AM) for the best wildlife viewing with fewer vehicles.
- Do not rushThe crater floor is compact โ you can cover it thoroughly in 5-6 hours without speeding between spots.
- Pack a rain jacketWeather changes quickly at this elevation. A clear morning can turn to rain within an hour.
- Altitude awarenessAt 2,200m+ on the rim, some people feel mild altitude effects โ slight breathlessness and headache. Stay hydrated.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a Ngorongoro Crater game drive take?
A typical crater game drive lasts 5-6 hours. You descend at 7:00-7:30 AM and ascend by 2:00-3:00 PM. This is enough time to cover all the major wildlife areas on the crater floor โ the grasslands, swamps, Lerai Forest, and Lake Magadi.
Can you see the Big Five in Ngorongoro Crater?
Yes. All Big Five โ lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros โ live in the crater. Lion, elephant, and buffalo sightings are almost guaranteed. Black rhino sightings are likely (roughly 70-80% of drives). Leopard is the hardest โ sightings occur on maybe 15-20% of drives.
Why is the Ngorongoro Crater fee so expensive?
The $295 crater service fee plus $82 NCA entry fee funds conservation of the crater ecosystem, anti-poaching operations, road maintenance, and support for the Maasai communities living in the NCA. Vehicle limits on the crater floor mean the fee also serves to manage visitor numbers and protect the environment.
Is Ngorongoro Crater worth the cost?
Absolutely. The concentration of wildlife โ including endangered black rhino โ in the dramatic caldera setting is found nowhere else on Earth. We include it in every northern circuit itinerary despite the high fees because it consistently delivers the most memorable single day of any Tanzania safari.
What is the best month to visit Ngorongoro Crater?
June-October for dry season reliability and shorter grass. January-February for the calving season, lush green landscapes, and peak flamingo numbers. The crater is good year-round โ the permanent water sources keep wildlife resident regardless of season. Avoid July-August if you dislike crowds.
Can you stay overnight in Ngorongoro Crater?
No. Overnight stays on the crater floor are not permitted. All vehicles must ascend before late afternoon. Accommodation is on the crater rim (lodges with crater views) or in Karatu town, 20 minutes from the NCA gate.
How deep is the Ngorongoro Crater?
The crater walls are approximately 600 meters (2,000 feet) deep from rim to floor. The crater rim sits at approximately 2,200-2,400 meters above sea level, while the floor is at approximately 1,700-1,800 meters.
Is Ngorongoro Crater a crater or a caldera?
Technically, it is a caldera โ formed by the collapse of a volcano rather than by an impact or explosion. However, "Ngorongoro Crater" is the universally accepted name and is how TANAPA and UNESCO refer to it. It is the world's largest inactive, intact, and unflooded volcanic caldera.
How many animals live in Ngorongoro Crater?
Approximately 25,000-30,000 large animals live permanently on the crater floor. This includes roughly 7,000-10,000 wildebeest, several thousand zebras, 60-80 lions, 60-70 bull elephants, hundreds of hyenas, and 26-30 endangered black rhinoceros. The density of large mammals is the highest of any ecosystem in Africa.
Can you drive your own vehicle in Ngorongoro Crater?
You must have a registered safari vehicle and a licensed guide to enter the crater. Self-drive in a rental car is not permitted on the crater floor, though you can drive yourself on the rim and NCA roads. All crater descents must be in a proper 4x4 safari vehicle with an authorized driver-guide.
Do the Maasai still live in Ngorongoro?
Yes. Over 90,000 Maasai live within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, making it the only wildlife conservation area in Tanzania where indigenous people reside alongside protected wildlife. They graze cattle on the rim and highlands but no longer live on the crater floor itself. Their presence is integral to the NCA's UNESCO World Heritage designation.
How do I combine Ngorongoro with the Serengeti?
The Serengeti is 2-3 hours by road from Ngorongoro's rim through the NCA. Most northern circuit safaris combine both โ typically visiting Serengeti first (2-3 days) and Ngorongoro Crater last (1 day game drive) before returning to Arusha. A minimum of 5 days is recommended for a proper combination including both parks plus Tarangire.
