December marks the return of dry conditions on Kilimanjaro after the short rains. Late December delivers 88-92% success rates, festive summit celebrations at Christmas and New Year, and dramatic clearing skies. This guide covers weather patterns, crowd levels, Lemosho and Machame as top routes from December 15+, holiday pricing premiums, and how to book the season's most sought-after departures.
December is when Kilimanjaro transforms from a mountain into a celebration. In our 800+ expeditions, some of our most memorable summits have happened in December โ groups singing carols at Barafu Camp, climbers popping champagne at Uhuru Peak on Christmas morning, and New Year's Day sunrise summits that have reduced grown adults to tears. But December is not just about festivity. It is also a strategically excellent climbing month. The short rains taper off in the first two weeks, skies clear dramatically from mid-month, and the mountain enters one of its best weather windows of the year. This guide covers everything you need to know about climbing Kilimanjaro in December: the weather transition, when to start your trek, which routes perform best, how the holiday season affects pricing and availability, and why a December summit might be the most unforgettable experience of your life.
December Weather on Kilimanjaro: The Short Rains Fade
Understanding December weather requires understanding what came before it. The short rainy season runs from late October through November, bringing 150-200mm of rain to the mountain's southern slopes. By early December, this system is losing energy. The moisture feed from the Indian Ocean weakens, cloud formations become less persistent, and dry spells lengthen. By December 15, the mountain is typically back in dry-season conditions that hold through February.
Temperature by Elevation
- Gate to rainforest (1,800-2,800m)Warm and humid in early December (18-28ยฐC), becoming drier and slightly cooler by month's end. The rainforest is at peak lushness from the November rains โ verdant, dripping, and teeming with birdlife.
- Moorland and heath zone (2,800-4,000m)Daytime temperatures of 5-15ยฐC, nighttime temperatures of -2 to 5ยฐC. Early December may see afternoon mist and light drizzle; late December is typically clear with excellent visibility.
- Alpine desert (4,000-4,700m)Daytime temperatures of 0-8ยฐC with strong solar radiation when skies clear. Nighttime temperatures at Barafu Camp drop to -8 to -12ยฐC. The air is exceptionally dry at this altitude, and dehydration is a greater concern than in wetter months.
- Summit zone (4,700-5,895m)Summit night temperatures range from -10 to -18ยฐC, with wind chill pushing perceived temperatures below -25ยฐC on exposed sections. December summit nights are among the coldest on the mountain because the dry air loses heat rapidly after sunset. Layer aggressively and do not underestimate the cold.
Rainfall Patterns Through December
The month divides cleanly into two weather regimes:
- December 1-14The tail end of the short rains. Expect 60-100mm of rainfall, concentrated in afternoon and evening showers in the rainforest and moorland zones. Above 4,000m, precipitation is usually light snow or sleet that melts by morning. Trails in the lower zones may still be muddy from November accumulation.
- December 15-31Dry conditions return. Rainfall drops to 20-40mm for the fortnight, often concentrated in brief, isolated showers that clear quickly. Skies above the treeline are predominantly clear, and summit-night visibility is excellent. This is when December climbing truly excels.

Crowd Levels: Moderate, Building to Holiday Peak
December crowd levels follow a predictable curve. The first two weeks are relatively quiet โ lingering short-rain concerns keep casual climbers away, and most schools and offices are still in session. From December 15 onward, numbers increase sharply as Christmas and New Year climbers arrive. The final week of December is one of the busiest periods on the mountain, rivalling August in total climber numbers.
December Crowd Timeline
- December 1-10Low to moderate. Similar to October levels. Excellent for climbers who want fewer people and are comfortable with residual short-rain weather.
- December 11-20Moderate. Numbers build as school holidays begin and the weather window opens. A good balance of decent weather and manageable crowds.
- December 21-31High. Christmas and New Year groups fill the popular routes. Machame and Marangu camps are at or near capacity. Lemosho and Northern Circuit remain less crowded but still busier than their off-season baseline.
If you are specifically planning a Christmas or New Year's summit, expect company. But the festive atmosphere is part of the appeal โ there is something extraordinary about sharing Uhuru Peak with people from twenty different countries, all celebrating the same moment.
Success Rates in December
December summit success rates range from 85% for early-month climbs (when residual weather can slow progress) to 92% for late-December climbs on well-acclimatised itineraries. The late-December figure matches or exceeds peak dry-season rates because the weather is reliably dry, climbers on holiday itineraries tend to choose longer routes with better acclimatisation, and the festive motivation to summit on Christmas or New Year's Day provides a powerful psychological boost.
Our guided groups consistently exceed the mountain average. In the 2024-2025 December season, our success rate across all routes was 94% โ with every failure attributable to acute altitude sickness requiring descent rather than weather or fitness factors. The combination of experienced guides, proper acclimatisation protocols, and the celebratory energy of December groups creates ideal conditions for summit success.
The December Magic: Holiday Summits
What sets December apart from every other month on Kilimanjaro is the emotional dimension. This is not just a trek โ it is a pilgrimage, a year-end reflection, a celebration of what the human body and spirit can accomplish.
Christmas on Kilimanjaro
Our Christmas groups typically start their trek on December 19-20 on a 7-day Lemosho or Machame route, timing the summit for December 25. Christmas Eve is spent at Barafu Camp (4,673m), where our crew prepares a special dinner โ roast chicken, vegetables, and Christmas cake baked in a camp oven at altitude. Our guides lead the group in songs, and climbers from different groups often mingle for an impromptu international Christmas gathering. At midnight, headlamps flicker on across the camp as groups begin the summit push. Arriving at Uhuru Peak as Christmas Day dawns over the African continent is an experience that redefines what Christmas means.
New Year's Summit Tradition
The New Year's summit is Kilimanjaro's most iconic December tradition. Groups departing on December 25-26 on a 7-day route summit on December 31 or January 1. Our New Year's groups carry a small celebration kit โ a bottle of champagne (carried by our summit porter), party horns, and a "Happy New Year" banner for the summit photo. Standing at 5,895 metres as the clock strikes midnight in East Africa, watching the stars wheel overhead and knowing you are on the highest point of an entire continent โ there is nothing else like it in adventure travel.
The tradition has grown significantly in recent years. In the 2024-2025 season, over 400 climbers summited on New Year's Day, making Uhuru Peak one of the most extraordinary New Year's celebration venues on the planet. If this is your goal, visit our Kilimanjaro Christmas and New Year's page for dedicated group departures.
School Holiday Family Climbs
December school holidays bring families to Kilimanjaro. We regularly guide parents with teenagers on December climbs โ it is a transformative bonding experience that no resort holiday can match. The minimum age for Kilimanjaro is 10, but we recommend 13+ for the full summit push. December's moderate temperatures (compared to July's colder nights) and festive atmosphere make it particularly suitable for younger climbers.
Best Routes for December Climbing
Route selection in December depends on when in the month you are climbing and whether you are targeting a holiday summit.
Best: Lemosho Route (7-8 Days)
The Lemosho is our top December recommendation. The 7-day itinerary is ideal for Christmas summits (start December 19), and the 8-day version provides maximum acclimatisation for climbers who want every possible advantage. The western approach means the first two days pass through the most pristine section of Kilimanjaro's rainforest, and the route's traverse across the Shira Plateau and through the Southern Circuit provides the most varied scenery on the mountain. From December 15 onward, weather conditions on the Lemosho are typically excellent.
Excellent: Machame Route (7 Days)
The Machame Route is Kilimanjaro's most popular for good reason โ dramatic scenery, excellent acclimatisation profile, and the iconic Barranco Wall scramble. The 7-day Machame itinerary times perfectly for a Christmas summit (start December 19) or a New Year's summit (start December 26). The route is busier than Lemosho in late December, but the social atmosphere at camps like Barranco and Karanga adds to the festive energy. The route details page has day-by-day breakdowns.
Good: Northern Circuit (9 Days)
For climbers with more time, the 9-day Northern Circuit is the ultimate December experience. The route circumnavigates Kilimanjaro, spending three days on the quiet northern slopes where you may not see another group. The extended itinerary provides the best acclimatisation on the mountain, and the northern traverse offers unique views of Mawenzi Peak that no other route provides. The trade-off is cost โ the extra days add to permit fees and crew charges. But for a once-in-a-lifetime December expedition, the Northern Circuit is unmatched.
Avoid in Early December: Marangu Route
The Marangu Route's hut-based accommodation means fixed stops and no flexibility. In early December, when residual short-rain weather can cause delays, the Marangu's rigid itinerary offers no buffer days. The route also has the lowest summit success rate of any major route due to its steep ascent profile and lack of proper acclimatisation days. From December 15 onward, Marangu is acceptable but still not our first choice.
December Pricing: Holiday Premium
December pricing follows a two-tier structure:
- December 1-14Shoulder-season pricing. Similar to October rates. Operators offer competitive rates to fill treks during the short-rain tail. This is the best value window in December โ you get improving weather at lower prices.
- December 15-31Peak-season pricing. Christmas and New Year's treks command a holiday premium of 10-20% above standard high-season rates. This reflects increased demand, limited permit availability, and the premium experience of a holiday summit. Despite the premium, these treks sell out months in advance.
Flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) also increase in December, particularly from European and North American gateways. Book flights 4-6 months ahead for the best fares. Some climbers fly into Nairobi (cheaper) and take the shuttle bus to Arusha/Moshi โ a 5-6 hour journey but often Flights to Kilimanjaro00-500 cheaper than direct JRO flights.
Booking Tips for December Climbs
December is the most advance-booked month on Kilimanjaro. Here is how to secure your spot:
- Book 4-6 months ahead for Christmas/New YearOur Christmas and New Year's group departures sell out by August. If you are reading this in June or July and want a holiday summit, book now. Waiting until October usually means the preferred dates are gone.
- Early December is flexibleIf you are targeting December 1-14, booking 2-3 months ahead is usually sufficient. These dates are less competitive and offer better pricing.
- Choose your summit date firstWork backwards from your desired summit date. A 7-day Lemosho summiting on December 25 starts on December 19. A 7-day Machame summiting on January 1 starts on December 26. Lock the summit date, then build the itinerary around it.
- Kilimanjaro page for both options.Group departures vs. private treksOur fixed-date group departures are more affordable per person, and the shared experience of a holiday summit with fellow climbers is part of the magic. Private treks offer flexibility but at a premium. See our
- Post-climb extensionDecember is peak safari season in northern Tanzania. The short rains have greened the landscape, animal congregations around water sources are spectacular, and the calving season in the Serengeti brings predator activity. A 3-4 day safari after your climb is the perfect way to round out a December trip.
What to Pack for a December Kilimanjaro Climb
December packing depends on your timing:
Early December (Dec 1-14)
Pack for variable conditions โ similar to October. Full waterproof shell layers, gaiters, pack cover, and waterproof boots are essential. The short rains may still produce afternoon showers in the lower zones. Above the treeline, conditions are cold and increasingly dry. Carry the full range of warm layers for summit night, including a down jacket rated to -15ยฐC or below.
Late December (Dec 15-31)
Pack for cold, dry conditions. Waterproof layers are still necessary (weather can surprise), but the emphasis shifts to warmth. Summit night temperatures in late December are among the coldest of the year because the dry air and clear skies allow rapid radiative cooling. Your warmest down jacket, balaclava, insulated gloves (plus liner gloves), and chemical hand warmers are all important. Refer to our complete Kilimanjaro gear list for the full checklist.
Festive Extras
- Christmas/New Year summit photo propsA small banner, Santa hat, or New Year's headband weighs nothing and creates summit photos you will treasure forever. Our porters carry the heavy celebration supplies โ champagne, cake, and decorations.
- Gifts for crewIf you are climbing over Christmas, consider bringing small gifts for your guides and porters. It is not expected, but it is deeply appreciated. Practical items โ warm hats, gloves, headlamps โ are valued more than trinkets.
- JournalA December Kilimanjaro climb is a deeply reflective experience โ the year ending, the physical challenge, the altitude-sharpened perspective. A small journal for summit-night thoughts is something many of our December climbers are glad they packed.
A December Summit Night
To give you a taste of what a late-December summit night feels like, here is the experience from our Christmas 2025 group on the Lemosho Route:
11:30 PM, December 24: Christmas Eve at Barafu Camp. The crew has prepared a special dinner โ roast chicken, rice, vegetables, and a dense chocolate cake with "Merry Christmas Kili" written in icing. The dining tent is warmer than usual because our guides have lined it with extra ground sheets. Songs are sung โ "Jingle Bells" in English, "Stille Nacht" from the German couple, "Baba Yetu" from our Tanzanian crew. At 11:45 PM, the head guide gives the summit briefing: dress warm, drink water, move slowly, trust your body.
12:00 AM, December 25: Headlamps on. The line of lights from Barafu Camp snakes upward into the darkness โ thirty groups, perhaps 200 climbers, all heading for the same point. The stars are staggering. Orion hangs directly overhead, and the Southern Cross sits low on the horizon. The temperature is -14ยฐC with a light wind from the east. The first hour is steep switchbacks on loose volcanic scree, and the rhythm of breathing and stepping becomes meditative.
3:00 AM: The halfway point. Legs are heavy, altitude is compressing your lungs, and the cold has seeped through every layer. This is the crucible. Our guide walks beside the slowest climber, adjusting pace, offering encouragement in Swahili and English. "Pole pole. Christmas is waiting for you at the top."
5:45 AM: Stella Point (5,756m). The eastern horizon is glowing amber and rose. The group assembles, hugs are exchanged, and the final 40-minute traverse to Uhuru Peak begins. The glaciers โ Rebmann, Decken, and the remnants of the Furtwรคngler โ glow pink in the pre-dawn light.
6:20 AM: Uhuru Peak. 5,895 metres. Christmas morning. The sun crests the horizon and floods the crater with golden light. The champagne cork echoes off the crater walls. The banner unfurls: "Merry Christmas from the Roof of Africa." Tears. Laughter. A moment that will define every Christmas that follows.
