Everything about the official KINAPA summit certificate โ gold, green, and blue levels, the famous summit sign photo, when you receive it, and how to preserve it.
One of the most frequently asked questions about climbing Kilimanjaro โ after "how hard is it?" โ is "do I get a certificate?" The answer is yes. Every climber who reaches a designated altitude milestone on Kilimanjaro receives an official summit certificate issued by KINAPA (Kilimanjaro National Park Authority). These certificates have become treasured keepsakes, framed and displayed in homes, offices, and gyms around the world. Here is everything you need to know about what you receive, when, and how.
Types of Certificates
KINAPA issues three different certificates depending on the altitude you reach:
| Certificate | Colour | Altitude Required | Location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summit Certificate | Gold | 5,895m โ Uhuru Peak | The true summit of Kilimanjaro and the highest point in Africa |
| Stella Point Certificate | Green | 5,756m โ Stella Point | The crater rim on the Marangu/Mweka descent side |
| Gilman's Point Certificate | Blue | 5,681m โ Gilman's Point | The crater rim reached via the Marangu route |
Which Certificate Will I Get?
If you reach Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, you receive the gold summit certificate. This is the one most climbers aim for, and with proper preparation and a good route, success rates are 85-95% on 7+ day routes.
If you reach the crater rim but cannot continue to Uhuru Peak (the walk from Stella Point to Uhuru Peak is approximately 45 minutes along the crater rim), you receive the green Stella Point certificate. This is still a remarkable achievement โ you have reached above 5,750 metres, higher than 99.9% of people will ever climb.
The blue Gilman's Point certificate is specific to climbers on the Marangu route who reach the crater rim at this point but go no further.
What Does the Certificate Look Like?
The KINAPA summit certificate is an A4-sized document printed on heavyweight card stock with:
- Full name of the climber (as registered at the gate)
- Date of summit
- Altitude reached (5,895m for Uhuru Peak)
- KINAPA official seal and signature
- Certificate number (unique serial)
- Kilimanjaro National Park branding with mountain silhouette
The design has been updated several times over the years. The current version is clean, professional, and suitable for framing. We recommend having it laminated or using a UV-protective frame to prevent fading.
When and Where You Receive It
Certificates are not handed out on the summit. The process works as follows:
- Summit dayYour guide records who reached which altitude, along with the time of arrival
- Descent to the gateAfter summiting, you descend all the way to the exit gate (Mweka Gate for most routes, Marangu Gate for the Marangu route). This takes 1-2 days depending on the route.
- Certificate ceremony at the gateAt the exit gate, a KINAPA official presents certificates to each climber. This is a brief but meaningful moment โ often accompanied by singing from your guides and porters, photos with the team, and sometimes an impromptu celebration.
- tipping ceremony where you thank your crew with tips.Tipping ceremonyThe certificate presentation typically coincides with the
The Famous Summit Sign Photo
While the certificate is the official document, the iconic summit photo at the Uhuru Peak sign is arguably the more famous keepsake. The wooden sign at Uhuru Peak reads:
CONGRATULATIONS!
YOU ARE NOW AT
UHURU PEAK, TANZANIA, 5895M AMSL
AFRICA'S HIGHEST POINT
WORLD'S HIGHEST FREE-STANDING MOUNTAIN
ONE OF THE WORLD'S LARGEST VOLCANOES
WELCOME
Every climber photographs this sign โ it is the definitive proof-of-summit image. Tips for the best photo:
- Queue patiently โ at popular times, there can be a queue. Your guide will manage the timing.
- Remove your gloves briefly (if you can bear the cold) for a cleaner photo
- Take photos with AND without your face covered โ you want at least one where your face is clearly visible
- Your guide will take the photo โ hand them your camera/phone. They have done this thousands of times and know the best angle.
- Bring a small flag, company banner, or personal item to hold โ many climbers bring a charity flag, national flag, or family photo

Other Keepsakes and Celebrations
Summit Stamps
Some climbers carry a passport or small notebook and ask the KINAPA officer at the gate to stamp it. This is not an official service but most officers are happy to do it with the park stamp. It makes a unique memento alongside your passport stamps.
Post-Climb Celebration
After descending and receiving your certificate, you transfer back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi. Most climbers celebrate with:
- A cold beer (the first in a week!) โ local Kilimanjaro Premium Lager is the traditional choice
- A hot shower โ after days of limited hygiene facilities, this feels like a luxury
- A large meal โ your appetite returns with a vengeance at lower altitude
- Sharing photos and stories with fellow climbers
Many of our climbers join us for a celebration dinner at a local restaurant, where the team comes together one final time. Read more about what happens after the summit.
Can I Get a Replacement Certificate?
If you lose or damage your certificate, contact KINAPA directly at their Moshi headquarters. Replacement certificates can be issued for a small administrative fee, provided your climb is in their records (all climbs are logged with dates, names, and passport numbers). Keep a high-resolution photo of your certificate as backup.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I get a certificate if I don't reach the summit?
If you reach Stella Point (5,756m) or Gilman's Point (5,681m), you receive a different coloured certificate for that altitude. If you turn back below the crater rim, no certificate is issued. However, there is no shame in turning back โ safety always comes first. See our safety guide.
Is the certificate free?
Yes. The certificate is included in your national park fees. There is no additional charge.
Can I get the certificate mailed if I forget to collect it?
It is very unusual to leave without your certificate, as it is presented at the gate before you depart. If for some reason you miss the presentation, your operator can arrange collection and mailing, though this involves logistical coordination with KINAPA.
Is the certificate personalised?
Yes. Each certificate has your full name (as per your passport/ID presented at gate registration), the specific date of your summit, the altitude reached, and a unique serial number.
How do I frame my Kilimanjaro certificate?
Standard A4 frame size fits perfectly. Use UV-protective glass to prevent the ink from fading over time. Many climbers display it alongside their summit photo, a small piece of volcanic rock from the summit (if collected), or their summit night head torch as a complete memorial display.
