This six-day migration-focused safari is designed around one goal: putting you in the best position to witness the great wildebeest migration in the Serengeti while also visiting the Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire. The migration does not follow a calendar — it follows the rain — so the specific areas we visit in the Serengeti shift depending on your travel month.

Between December and March, the herds gather on the southern short-grass plains for calving season. From June through October, they push northward toward the Mara River crossings. As your guide, I adjust the plan to match the current conditions. Three nights in the Serengeti give you the time needed to find and stay with the herds. Morning game drives start at dawn when the light is best and the predators are most active. Lions and cheetahs know the migration patterns as well as any guide, and they position themselves along the routes the wildebeest follow. Watching a cheetah hunt on the open Serengeti plains — the acceleration, the dust, the split-second outcome — is one of nature's most intense moments. The Ngorongoro Crater offers a different kind of intensity. Inside the caldera, you find all of the Big Five within a morning. The crater's resident lion prides are well-studied and relatively habituated, allowing for close observation of social behavior. Hippo pools, flamingo-lined lakes, and the chance to spot black rhino grazing in the Lerai Forest make this a day of concentrated highlights. Tarangire bookends the trip with its elephant herds and distinctive baobab woodland. The park is less visited than the Serengeti, which means quieter game drives and more personal encounters with wildlife.
