Six days across Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater, and the Serengeti is one of the most popular itineraries in Tanzania, and for good reason — it balances three completely different ecosystems, giving you the diversity that makes the northern circuit world-famous. I have guided this route hundreds of times, and it still surprises me.

Every season shifts the wildlife, every visit reveals something new. Tarangire sets the tone with its vast elephant herds, some numbering over 300 individuals during the dry season. The park's Tarangire River is the lifeline, and watching animals converge on it from every direction is a lesson in how water shapes the African bush. You will also encounter giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and the elegant fringe-eared oryx — a Tarangire specialty. The Ngorongoro Crater comes next, and nothing quite prepares you for the first view from the rim. The crater floor sits 600 meters below, and from above you can already see the dark shapes of buffalo herds and the white specks of flamingos on the soda lake. The descent takes about 30 minutes, and once on the floor, the wildlife is immediate. Lion prides rest near the hippo pools, spotted hyenas patrol the grasslands, and black rhinos graze in the distance. A packed bush lunch by the Ngoitokitok spring gives you time to watch hippos just meters away. Three days in the Serengeti allow for proper exploration. The central Seronera Valley is where most big cat action happens — leopards in riverside trees, cheetahs on the plains, and lion prides claiming rocky kopjes as their territory. Sunrise game drives here start before most of the other vehicles are out, giving you quiet encounters with the predators while the light is golden and the air still cool.
