The wildlife is identical, and many experienced travelers prefer the immediacy of camping, where the African night is right outside your tent and the morning chorus of birds is your alarm clock. Lake Manyara opens the safari with a morning game drive through one of East Africa's most diverse small parks. The groundwater forest along the entrance is home to blue monkeys, baboons, and enormous python snakes, while the open floodplain beyond draws giraffes, elephants, and the park's famous tree-climbing lions. Over 400 bird species have been recorded here, making it a paradise for birders. Two nights in the Serengeti are the heart of this safari. You camp at designated sites in the Seronera Valley, where the concentration of big cats is among the highest in Africa. Morning game drives start early, catching lions returning from nocturnal hunts and cheetahs scanning the plains from termite mound lookouts. Leopards are often spotted in the large fig trees along the Seronera River, and during migration season, the surrounding plains can be carpeted with wildebeest as far as you can see. The Ngorongoro Crater on your final full day is a fitting conclusion. A dawn descent into the caldera puts you on the crater floor while the mist is still burning off, and the next four to five hours produce a highlight reel of Africa's most iconic wildlife. Our camp cook prepares a hot bush lunch on the crater rim before the drive back to Arusha.
