Complete guide to Nyerere National Park โ formerly the Selous Game Reserve. Boat safaris on the Rufiji, walking safaris, fly camping, and 50,000 kmยฒ of wilderness. Planning advice from our Moshi-based team.
When we tell guests that Tanzania has a national park larger than Switzerland, they don't believe us at first. But Nyerere National Park โ formerly the northern section of the Selous Game Reserve โ sits at the heart of a 50,000 kmยฒ wilderness that dwarfs any other protected area in Africa. We've been running safaris here from our Moshi base for years, and we consider Nyerere one of the most exciting and underappreciated parks on the continent.
If you've done the Serengeti and Ngorongoro and want something completely different โ boat safaris, walking safaris, fly camping under the stars, and genuine remoteness โ Nyerere is where we send you.
Nyerere vs Selous: What Changed?
In 2019, the Tanzanian government split the former Selous Game Reserve and renamed the northern tourism section Nyerere National Park, after Julius Kambarage Nyerere, Tanzania's founding president and the father of the nation. The southern section retains the Selous Game Reserve designation and remains a controlled hunting concession and conservation area โ it is not open to tourism.
For practical purposes, when you book a "Selous safari" today, you're visiting Nyerere National Park. The wildlife, the Rufiji River, the boat safaris โ everything that made the Selous legendary is in the Nyerere section. The name changed; the experience didn't.
Where Is Nyerere National Park?
Nyerere sits in southeastern Tanzania, approximately 250 km southwest of Dar es Salaam. It's part of Tanzania's southern safari circuit, along with Ruaha National Park and the Udzungwa Mountains. The park is centred on the mighty Rufiji River and its network of lakes, channels, and floodplains.
The broader Selous ecosystem โ including the hunting reserve to the south โ covers approximately 50,000 kmยฒ. That's larger than Switzerland (41,285 kmยฒ), larger than Denmark, and roughly the size of Costa Rica. It's the single largest protected wildlife area in Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Rufiji River: Africa's Mightiest
If the Great Ruaha River defines Ruaha National Park, the Rufiji River defines Nyerere โ but on a grander scale. The Rufiji is one of East Africa's largest river systems, draining nearly 20% of Tanzania's land surface. It flows through the park in a vast, braided network of channels, ox-bow lakes, and seasonal floodplains that create one of the most diverse aquatic ecosystems on the continent.
The Rufiji is not just a scenic feature โ it's the foundation for activities that are unique to Nyerere and unavailable in any other major Tanzanian park. More on that below.
Wildlife of Nyerere National Park
The scale of Nyerere's wildlife populations reflects the scale of the ecosystem itself. This is big-number territory:
- Elephants: 30,000+ โ One of the largest elephant populations in any single African park. Herds of 50-100 individuals are common along the Rufiji, particularly during the dry season when they come to drink and bathe.
- Buffalo: 160,000+ โ Massive herds, sometimes numbering over 1,000 individuals, moving across the floodplains. A buffalo herd of this size, kicking up dust as it crosses the savanna, is a sight you don't forget.
- Hippos: 40,000+ โ The Rufiji's pools and lakes support one of the highest hippo densities in Africa. On boat safaris, you'll pass pods of 30-40 hippos within arm's reach (well, almost).
- Wild dogs โ Nyerere supports one of the largest remaining populations of African wild dogs globally. The open woodland and floodplain terrain is ideal hunting ground for packs.
- Lions and leopards โ Healthy populations of both big cats. Lions here are often seen in the riverine woodland, and leopards favour the dense bush along lake edges.
- Crocodiles โ Massive Nile crocodiles are a Rufiji fixture. Specimens exceeding 5 metres are regularly spotted from boats. The crocs here are some of the largest we've seen anywhere in Tanzania.
The sheer biomass in Nyerere is overwhelming. On a single boat safari, you might see elephants, hippos, crocodiles, fish eagles, and kingfishers within the first 30 minutes โ and that's before you've even started a game drive.
Activities: What Makes Nyerere Unique
This is where Nyerere separates itself from every other park in Tanzania. While the Serengeti and Ngorongoro are vehicle-only parks, Nyerere offers a range of activities that are either exclusive to this park or done here better than anywhere else.
Boat Safaris on the Rufiji
This is the signature Nyerere experience, and the single biggest reason we recommend this park. Nyerere is the only major national park in Tanzania offering boat safaris.
You board a motorboat or a traditional wooden vessel and spend 2-3 hours floating along the Rufiji River and its connected lakes โ Tagalala, Manze, and Nzerakera. The boat moves silently through the water (engines cut at key points), bringing you within metres of hippos surfacing, crocodiles basking on sandbanks, and elephants drinking at the water's edge.
The photography from a boat is exceptional. You're at water level, shooting upward at elephants silhouetted against the sky, or eye-level with a hippo breaking the surface. No other park in Tanzania offers this perspective. For photographers, we consider the Rufiji boat safari one of the top five wildlife photography experiences in East Africa.
Walking Safaris
Nyerere has an extensive walking safari tradition โ the park was originally built on foot-based exploration, and that heritage remains strong. Walking here isn't a novelty add-on; it's a core activity with experienced armed rangers and dedicated walking guides.
Walks range from 2-hour morning excursions to full-day hikes covering 10-15 km. You'll track animal spoor, identify medicinal plants, and experience the bush at ground level โ hearing every rustle, smelling the wild sage, feeling the terrain under your boots. The adrenaline of walking in an area with lions and elephants is something a vehicle can never replicate.
Fly Camping
For the genuinely adventurous, several camps in Nyerere offer fly camping โ you walk out from the main camp with a guide, a cook, and minimal equipment, and set up a temporary camp in the bush. A bedroll, a mosquito net, a campfire, and the sounds of the African night. No tent walls between you and the wild.
We've had guests describe fly camping in Nyerere as the most extraordinary night of their lives. It's not for everyone โ you need comfort with the idea of sleeping in lion country with nothing but a fire between you and the darkness. But for those who embrace it, there's nothing else like it in safari tourism.
Fishing on the Rufiji
Catch-and-release fishing is available on certain stretches of the Rufiji. Tiger fish are the main quarry โ aggressive fighters that put up a spectacular battle on light tackle. Fishing safaris combine morning game drives with afternoon fishing sessions, and it's a combination that appeals to guests who want variety beyond traditional game viewing.
Game Drives
Classic vehicle-based game drives remain a core activity, covering the network of tracks along the Rufiji and around the major lakes. Morning drives start at dawn and focus on predator activity; afternoon drives extend into golden hour for photography. The road network in the tourism section is well-maintained, though some routes close during heavy rains.
Best Time to Visit Nyerere National Park
| Season | Months | Conditions | Our Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peak Dry Season | July โ October | Best game viewing, excellent boat safaris as water levels drop, animals concentrated | Best overall โ prime time for boat safaris and game drives |
| Early Dry Season | June | Transition month, water levels dropping, green landscapes turning gold | Great value โ fewer guests, good wildlife |
| Green Season | January โ March | Lush landscapes, excellent birding, baby animals, some flooding | Best for birding enthusiasts and photographers who love green backdrops |
| Short Rains | November โ December | Brief afternoon showers, landscapes greening up, some roads challenging | Acceptable โ check with us on specific camp accessibility |
| Long Rains | April โ May | Heavy rainfall, flooding, many camps close | Avoid โ most operations shut down |
For boat safaris specifically, the dry season is essential. As water levels drop, the Rufiji's channels narrow and wildlife concentrates along the remaining water โ creating the dense, dramatic sightings that make Nyerere famous. How to Get to Nyerere National Park
By Air (Strongly Recommended)
By Road
The drive from Dar es Salaam takes 6-7 hours on rough roads via Kibiti. It's possible with a 4x4 but exhausting, and we strongly recommend flying instead. The time and energy saved by a 45-minute flight versus a 7-hour drive is worth the cost โ you arrive fresh and start your safari immediately rather than spending a day recovering from the road.
We handle all flight bookings and logistics for our guests. The southern circuit requires careful coordination of light aircraft connections, and we've been doing this long enough to know exactly how to route it. Explore our Tanzania destinations for the full range of options.
Where to Stay in Nyerere
Camps in Nyerere are spread along the Rufiji River and its lakes, each offering a slightly different character and focus.
Luxury
- Siwandu โ Waterfront camp on Lake Nzerakera with 13 tented suites. Outstanding boat safari access, excellent guiding, and a stunning lakeside setting. Elephants and hippos regularly pass through camp. This is our top luxury pick for Nyerere.
- Sand Rivers Selous โ A legendary camp and one of the original walking safari operators in the Selous. Located on the banks of the Rufiji with open-fronted stone-and-thatch cottages. The guiding team here is among the best in East Africa โ several guides have 20+ years of experience in this ecosystem.
Mid-Range
- Roho ya Selous โ Operated by Asilia Africa, this camp offers excellent value with strong guiding and a beautiful location. Eight tented rooms overlooking Lake Nzerakera. The combination of quality and price makes this our most-recommended mid-range option.
- Lake Manze Camp โ Comfortable tented camp on Lake Manze with reliable hippo and elephant sightings. Good base for both boat safaris and game drives. Solid mid-range choice.
Budget
- TANAPA campsites โ Basic public campsites near the main gate. You'll need your own equipment and supplies. We can arrange full camping safaris for budget travellers, including vehicle, guide, cook, and all equipment.
Combining Nyerere with Other Destinations
Nyerere's proximity to Dar es Salaam makes it the easiest southern circuit park to combine with other destinations:
- Nyerere + Ruaha โ The definitive southern circuit. Fly between the two parks (connecting through Dar or direct charters). Allow 7-10 days: 3-4 nights Nyerere + 3-4 nights Ruaha. You get the boat safaris and Rufiji experience of Nyerere plus the lion and wild dog country of Ruaha. This is our favourite combination for experienced safari travellers.
- Nyerere + Zanzibar โ Bush and beach. Fly from Nyerere back to Dar (45 minutes), then Dar to Zanzibar (20 minutes). Some operators offer direct Nyerere-Zanzibar charters. Allow 3-4 nights Nyerere + 4-5 nights Zanzibar.
- Nyerere + Northern Circuit โ Combine the southern wilderness with Serengeti and Ngorongoro. This requires flying via Dar and connecting to Arusha or directly to the Serengeti. A full 10-14 day itinerary that covers two completely different Tanzanias.
The Southern Circuit Advantage
We talk about the southern circuit a lot because we genuinely believe it's the future of Tanzanian safari tourism. Here's why:
- Fraction of the tourists โ Nyerere receives under 10,000 visitors per year. The Serengeti receives over 350,000. Do the maths.
- Activities beyond game drives โ Boat safaris, walking safaris, fly camping, fishing. The northern circuit is overwhelmingly vehicle-based.
- Genuine remoteness โ No tarmac roads, no gift shops at the gate, no queue of 40 vehicles around a leopard in a tree. This is how safari used to feel.
- Value โ While flights add cost, accommodation in the south often offers better value per night than equivalent properties in the Serengeti.
For guests who have already experienced the Serengeti, the southern circuit is not a "lesser alternative" โ it's a completely different experience that many of our returning clients actually prefer. Browse our Tanzania safari packages to see southern circuit options.
The Big Five in Nyerere
Like Ruaha, Nyerere has four of the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo. Rhinos were historically present but were poached out of the ecosystem. There are ongoing discussions about reintroduction programmes, but as of now, Nyerere is not a Big Five destination.
What it lacks in rhinos, it makes up for with experiences you cannot have anywhere else โ boat safaris, fly camping, and walking safaris in a wilderness larger than some European countries.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Nyerere National Park the same as Selous Game Reserve?
Nyerere National Park was carved out of the northern tourism section of the former Selous Game Reserve in 2019 and renamed after Tanzania's founding president, Julius Nyerere. The southern section retains the Selous name as a conservation and controlled-hunting area. When you book a "Selous safari" today, you're visiting Nyerere National Park.
How big is Nyerere National Park?
The broader Selous ecosystem covers approximately 50,000 kmยฒ โ larger than Switzerland and the largest protected area in Africa. The Nyerere National Park tourism section is a portion of this, but the exact boundaries of the tourism zone span thousands of square kilometres of wilderness.
What is a boat safari in Nyerere like?
You board a motorboat on the Rufiji River or one of its lakes (Tagalala, Manze, Nzerakera) for 2-3 hours. The boat brings you within metres of hippos, crocodiles, and elephants at the water's edge. Engines are cut at key moments for silent approaches. The water-level perspective is unique for photography. This activity is only available in Nyerere โ no other major Tanzanian park offers it.
What is the best time to visit Nyerere National Park?
June to October (dry season) is best for game viewing and boat safaris. As water levels drop, animals concentrate along the Rufiji, creating exceptional sightings. January to March is good for birding and green season photography. Avoid April and May โ heavy rains close most camps. See our seasonal guide for details.
How do you get to Nyerere National Park?
Fly from Dar es Salaam โ scheduled flights take just 45 minutes to reach the park's airstrips. Driving from Dar takes 6-7 hours on rough roads and is not recommended. There are no direct flights from Arusha; you must connect through Dar es Salaam. We arrange all flights and transfers.
What is fly camping in Nyerere?
Fly camping is a minimalist overnight bush experience. You walk out from your main camp with a guide, cook, and basic equipment, then set up a temporary camp in the wilderness โ a bedroll under a mosquito net, a campfire, and nothing else. It's sleeping under the stars in lion and elephant country. Not for everyone, but those who do it call it life-changing.
Can you combine Nyerere with Zanzibar?
Yes โ it's one of our most popular combinations. Fly from Nyerere to Dar es Salaam (45 minutes), then Dar to Zanzibar (20 minutes). Some operators offer direct charter flights. We recommend 3-4 nights in Nyerere and 4-5 nights in Zanzibar for a bush-and-beach itinerary.
Are there wild dogs in Nyerere?
Yes. Nyerere supports one of the largest remaining populations of African wild dogs (painted wolves) globally. The open woodland and floodplain terrain provides ideal hunting conditions. Sightings are most reliable during the dry season when packs are active in the mornings and evenings.
Is Nyerere National Park safe to visit?
Yes. Nyerere is a well-managed national park under TANAPA (Tanzania National Parks Authority). All activities are conducted with experienced guides and, for walking safaris, armed rangers. Camps have security measures in place. As with any African wilderness, you follow your guide's instructions at all times.
How does Nyerere compare to the Serengeti?
The Serengeti has the wildebeest migration and is more accessible from Arusha. Nyerere offers boat safaris, walking safaris, fly camping, and a fraction of the tourists (under 10,000 vs over 350,000 per year). The Serengeti is a vehicle-based experience; Nyerere is multi-activity. We recommend the Serengeti for first-timers and Nyerere for returning guests or those seeking adventure beyond game drives.
How many days do you need in Nyerere?
We recommend 3-4 nights to experience the full range of activities: game drives, a boat safari, and a walking safari. If you add fly camping, allow 4-5 nights. For a southern circuit combination with Ruaha, plan 7-10 days total across both parks.
What is the entry fee for Nyerere National Park?
TANAPA charges USD $50 per adult per 24 hours for non-resident visitors. Children aged 5-15 pay USD $20. Additional fees apply for boat safaris and walking safaris. All fees are included in our safari package prices โ we handle all park fee payments so you don't need to carry cash into the park.
