Day-by-Day Itinerary (7-Day Version)
Day 1: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp
Drive from Moshi through the town of Marangu and along the Kenyan border to Rongai Gate. The trek begins through cultivated farmland before entering a beautiful pine forest. The gentle gradient makes for an easy first day. Camp at Simba ("Lion") Camp on the edge of the moorland.
Day 2: Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp
Enter the open moorland zone with increasingly stunning views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The trail passes First Cave (a possible lunch stop) before reaching Second Cave Camp. The landscape feels remote and wild, with few other climbers in sight.
Day 3: Second Cave to Kikelewa Camp
Continue across the northern moorland with Mawenzi's dramatic spires growing larger. The path is gentle, allowing good acclimatization. Camp at Kikelewa with spectacular views of Mawenzi's eastern face.
Day 4: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Ascend more steeply to Mawenzi Tarn, a small alpine lake nestled beneath Mawenzi's towering cliffs. This dramatic camp sits in a cirque with 1,000m rock walls above. Afternoon acclimatization hike highly recommended.
Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Huts
Cross the lunar landscape of the "Saddle" - the high-altitude desert between Mawenzi and Kibo. This barren expanse feels otherworldly. Arrive at Kibo Huts in early afternoon for rest before summit night.
Day 6: Summit Day - Kibo Huts to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Huts
Midnight start for the summit push up the rocky path to Gilman's Point (5,681m) on the crater rim. Continue along the rim past Hans Meyer Point to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). After sunrise summit photos, descend the long way down to Horombo Huts.
Day 7: Horombo Huts to Marangu Gate
Long descent through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate. Collect your summit certificate and celebrate with your crew. The descent via Marangu means you experience two different sides of the mountain.
