The skies are largely clear, especially in the mornings, with afternoon cloud building over the upper mountain but rarely bringing significant precipitation. Visibility at the summit is generally excellent in January and February.
Trail conditions are at their firmest during this season. The paths have dried out from the November–December short rains and have not yet been churned up by the heavy April–May long rains. This means less mud, better footing on scree and glaciated sections, and drier conditions in the forest zone.
One of the biggest advantages of the January–March window is significantly lower crowds than the peak June–October season. Camp sites are less congested, there is a quieter, more intimate feel on the mountain, and booking availability is better. If you are flexible on timing and want to avoid the busiest periods, January to mid-March is an excellent choice.

June to October: The Long Dry Season (Prime Climbing Season)
The June to October window is widely regarded as the best time to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and accounts for the majority of annual ascents. This is the heart of Tanzania's long dry season — a five-month period of consistently clear skies, dry trails, and excellent visibility.
The trade-off for these ideal conditions is temperature: this is the coldest period on Kilimanjaro. Night-time temperatures at the summit crater can plunge to −15°C to −20°C, and even at the Barafu Camp base (4,673m) temperatures regularly fall to −5°C to −10°C overnight. July and August represent the absolute peak of Kilimanjaro climbing season. If you value solitude, be prepared for company on the trails during this window — though the mountain is vast enough that it rarely feels overcrowded once you leave the main campsites.
September and October are arguably the sweet spot of the long dry season: conditions are just as good as July–August, temperatures are slightly warmer as the season winds down, and trail congestion eases considerably as school holidays end across Europe and North America. For climbers with flexibility, late September to mid-October is a particularly appealing option.

April and May: The Long Rains (Most Challenging)
April and May bring the heaviest rainfall of the year to Kilimanjaro. The long rains, driven by the northward passage of the ITCZ, deliver sustained precipitation that can last for hours each day. Trails in the rainforest zone become deeply muddy and slippery, upper routes through the heath and moorland turn boggy, and summit visibility is frequently poor due to persistent cloud cover.
